Watertown police officer’s gun goes off inside Public Safety Building

WATERTOWN — Police are investigating the accidental firing of an officer’s weapon Monday afternoon inside the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building.

The gun went off around midafternoon in a conference room on the city police side of the shared facility, Jefferson County Administrator Robert F. Hagemann III said.

“We don’t know how it happened,” he said.

No one was injured and the building received only minor damage. The city police officer was not identified.

“We’re going to do an internal investigation,” Watertown City Manager Sharon A. Addison said. “That’s all I know.”

She said she was told of the incident by Mayor Jeffrey E. Graham and said that the gun’s safety may have been off at the time of the firing.

City Police Chief Gary R. Comins was not in the building at the time, she said.

Councilwoman Roxanne M. Burns suggested that Ms. Addison make sure all the information surrounding the case is made public.

City police are handling the investigation. Mr. Hagemann said he was given the information by Jefferson County Undersheriff Paul W. Trudeau. Calls to Mr. Trudeau and city police were not immediately returned.
