ITHACA While the Syracuse University mens lacrosse team has taken its lumps in its first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference, it continues to feast on nonconference foes.
Junior Randy Staats recorded a career high nine points, including scoring five goals, to spark the No. 7 Orange past No. 6 Cornell, 14-9, Tuesday night in a nonleague game at Schoellkopf Field.
Syracuse (7-3), which has struggled in its first campaign in the ACC with only one victory in four games, improved to 6-0 this season against nonconference opponents.
Kevin Rice totaled seven points, including three goals to help pace the Orange, who have won three consecutive games.
Staats scored six of his goals in the second half and assisted on two others as Syracuse erased a 5-4 Cornell lead late in the first half and then cruised in the fourth quarter to hand the Big Red its second consecutive home loss by an identical 14-9 score.
The Orange held the edge in shots (43-38), ground balls (29-24) and faceoffs (14 of 26).
Goalies Dominic Lamolinara, who received the win, and Bobby Wardwell each made six saves for the Orange.
Lintner finished with three goals for the Big Red and Joe Paoletta and Connor Buczek each had two goals.
