Fort Covington firefighers aid Dundee man trapped in home by flooding

FORT COVINGTON - Members of the Fort Covington Fire Department helped a Dundee, Que., man escape his home Wednesday evening after the flooding Salmon River pushed close to two feet of water against his front door.

According to Fire Chief Tony Leroux, four water rescue-trained firefighters were dispatched to the Old Dundee Customs Road at 7:21 p.m., after a call came in requesting assistance at a home on that road.

Mr. Leroux reported the pressure of knee-deep flood water kept the man from opening his door to escape.

While two crew members in rescue suits responded to the call, helping the man to dry land, two other members checked other residences on the road. No other homeowners were in need of assistance.

The rescued man was checked out by Fort Covington EMTs and released.

Mr. Leroux said travelers planning to cross into Canada at the Fort Covington/Dundee Customs station on state Route 970T should watch out for flooding there, too. Signs were placed along the road Wednesday, warning motorists to use caution. In the coming days, New York state will decide if the flooding is serious enough to close the customs station and reroute travelers to other crossings.
