STAR LAKE Clifton-Fine Central School is starting a new way for the community to use its fitness room after officials learned several elementary students were in it unsupervised.
The fitness room in a separate wing of the school has been unlocked for community use, but school leaders did not think it appropriate that several fifth-graders were in the room by themselves. The room contains free weights, treadmills and elliptical trainers.
We were afraid they would get hurt, Superintendent Regina C. Yeo said.
At a special meeting Tuesday, the board agreed that students and those younger than 18 could not use the room without a coach or teacher.
The district also will issue one door fob per family to those who fill out paperwork. They will be able to use the room whenever the fitness room is open. Hours will be from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on school days and from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on non-school days. The room has 10 to 15 regular users during the school year.
