The Ogdensburg Housing Authority is preparing to do a major overhaul of the lighting used on its public housing properties that will see a combination of new fluorescent bulbs and light-emitting diode bulbs installed.

Executive Director William J. Seymour Jr. said the project will take place over the next two to three months as maintenance workers are able to get away from their day-to-day responsibilities to do the work.

Work on the project will begin in a few weeks, Mr. Seymour said, when all 700 to 800 lights arrive.

The federally funded, $50,000 project will hopefully net cost savings for the authority, Mr. Seymour said.

He said he hopes to see energy savings eventually adding up to as much as a couple thousand dollars a year.

Lighting fixtures at Centennial and Riverview Towers, Parkview Rise and Belmont Courts will be updated. Areas include kitchens and exterior fixtures at Belmont Courts, hallways at Parkview Rise, exterior parking lot lights and hallways at Centennial Terrace and parking lot and exterior lighting at Riverview Tower, Mr. Seymour said.

The Authority updated the interior lighting at Riverview Tower last year, and four years ago the bedrooms at Belmont Courts got lighting updates, Mr. Seymour noted. Besides energy efficiency the project is also about modernization.

Mr. Seymour said that many of the Housing Authority’s light fixtures are out of date, with manufacturers ending production for many of the bulbs used on the Authority’s properties.
