GOUVERNEUR — An anonymous bomb threat Wednesday morning caused a two and a half hour lockdown at Gouverneur high school and middle school.

The threat came at about 7:45 a.m. and village police and a state police K-9 Unit were brought in to search the buildings, school Superintendent Lauren F. French said.

She declined to say by what means the threat was made, citing an ongoing police investigation.

“We take all threats very seriously and work with the police with the number-one goal of keeping everyone safe,” Mrs. French said. “When we talk about a lock-down, we restrict student activity and promote safety.”

The school has about 900 students, Ms. French said, adding that every decision made is based on the unique circumstance of the threat and through consultation with law enforcement.

Village police Sgt. Laurina M. Greenhill said she contacted state police to use their bomb-detection dog, which found no evidence of a bomb.

“It was pretty cut and dry,” Sgt. Greenhill said. “The school will be looking into some things and we will be following up with the school.”

Sgt. Greenhill said the buildings were secured and the students returned to classes at about 10 a.m.
