Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2936 members have found a buyer for their former headquarters at 525 Caroline St.
Silver Rose Realty Inc. purchased the property from the VFW for $50,000 earlier this month.
Silver Rose Realty owner Michael Frary also owns Frary Funeral Home, located next door at 515 Caroline St. Mr. Frary said he has not decided whether to demolish or keep the building intact.
There are some nice parts to the building, he said. The downstairs and second two floors are in very good shape.
Part of the property could be used to provide more parking for visitors to the funeral home, Mr. Frary said.
But we havent decided that yet either, he said. The outside is in pretty tough shape. Our first plan is to put in new sidewalks and curbing just fix the outside aesthetics of the building. Other than that, we havent decided what to do yet.
VFW Commander Scott A. Compo has said the VFW will use the money from the sale of the property to pay off the clubs debts.
In 2012, Commander Larry F. Latimer, unable to pay the posts bills, turned over the buildings keys to the state VFW.
The post was in danger of having its charter revoked by the state VFW after owing upward of $50,000 to the state, vendors and utilities.
The VFWs 180 members have been steadily paying off the clubs debts since. Members are still actively searching for a new location for the group.
