Hastings man accused of trying to cash fake check

MEXICO—State police arrested David W. Van Slyke, 59, of 444 County Route 45, Hastings, on two felony charges after he tried to cash a fake check for nearly $2,000.

The check, valued at $1,990.50, was made payable to him from Walmart, police said. It is unclear whether the check was a false paycheck or a money order.

On March 19, he allegedly brought the check to Pathfinder Bank, 3361 Main St., in an attempt to cash it. Police said Mr. Van Slyke told them he suffers from dementia and does not remember how he got the check.

He was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny and second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument. He was arraigned in Town Court and released on his own recognizance.
