WATERTOWN — John Thomas Allen, 90, 126 Elm St., passed away under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County, Wednesday afternoon at the home of his daughter in Carthage.

Born in Watertown on January 28, 1924 the son of Cecil H. & Annie Branson Allen. He attended school in Watertown. He served in the United States Army during World War II and saw combat in Germany, where he was injured on March 23, 1945. He was a Purple Heart recipient. He married Fern Audrey Rogers on September 20, 1947 in Gananoque, Ontario, Canada. He worked as a machinist for the New York Air Brake and also for Keenan Service. He retired from Lewis & Clinch, Watertown.

He was well known for being able to fix most anything or make a new one. He loved the St. Lawrence River, he and his wife spent many years enjoying their island and fishing. He also found great comfort from his little dachshund, Jetty, who followed him everywhere. He was a life member of IBEW and the American Legion Post #61, Watertown.

Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, at home, his daughter, Debra Allen Austin, Carthage, his grandchildren, Jaime, John and Julie Austin and his great-granddaughter, BraeLynn Madison Bigelow. Also surviving are his sister, Jean Bamford, Watertown, his nephew, Timothy Bamford, VA, his niece and her husband, Karen & Mike Moran, Baldwinsville. Also a part of his close extended family was Eric Byers (deceased), Ottawa, Ontario and Pat Byers and his wife Jennifer, Ottawa.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 14 at 12:00 PM in the Chapel of the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage, with the Rev. Linda J. Harris, officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service from 11 – 12. Burial will be at a later date in North Watertown Cemetery.

His family would like to thank all of his caregivers who helped with his comfort as well as Hospice of Jefferson County.
