Massena’s Matt Hatch suiting up for NCAA hockey final

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Championship Game tonight between Union College and the University of Minnesota will feature some North Country talent.

A senior forward, Massena’s Matt Hatch is expected to get a regular shift once again as the ECAC Champion Dutchmen make their first-ever appearance in the national title game this evening at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Union advanced via a 5-4 win over Boston College Thursday night while Minnesota outlasted North Dakota 2-1. Tonight’s game is slated to face-off at 7:30 p.m.

A leading contributor to the penalty killing efforts for Union throughout the season, Hatch has helped extend his college career by generating four goals and an assist over the last four games for the Dutchman including a goal and assist in a 5-2 win over Colgate in the ECAC Championship Game at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, two goals in a 5-2 decision over Vermont in the first round of the NCAA Division I tournament last Friday in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and the clinching goal in a 3-1 quarterfinal win over Providence the following night.

His ice time against Boston College on Thursday was cut short when he was whistled for a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for a hit from behind with 13:11 left in regulation, just 18 seconds after the Dutchmen had taken a 3-2 lead.

The 2013-14 Dutchmen improved to 31-6-4. Already the first hockey team in school history to reach the 30-win plateau, they stretched the longest active winning streak in the nation to 14-0-1 with the win over the Eagles after having advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four for the second time in three years.

Hatch, who was a senior on Massena Central team that won the 2008 NYSPHSAA Division I championship, has played in all 41 games for Union this season. He is one of 11 players with at least 19 points having tallied 13 points and eight assists to raise his career totals to 34 goals and 38 assists for 72 points in 146 games.

Hatch is the son of Brian and Tina Hatch of Massena.
