Jefferson County Cooperative Extension working on survey of food hubs

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County wants to know whether it should develop local food hubs within the six-county area.

Under a regional grant, Cooperative Extension officials are conducting a survey for food producers to find out whether food hubs would benefit both north country food producers and consumers.

The survey will gauge what is available and the potential for growth and determine where a food hub would be located.

A food hub is a place where food is collected and goes to market both locally and statewide. They improve access to markets and pricing because of a steadier supply with consistent quality, agency officials said.

The agency has scheduled a meeting for 6 to 8 p.m. May 14 at the Cornell Cooperative Extension office, 203 N. Hamilton St., Watertown.

To RSVP for the event, call Lisa Vaughn at 788-8450, ext. 261.
