Potsdam High School again wins St. Lawrence University math contest


CANTON - Forty-four students from 11 local school districts participated Wednesday in St. Lawrence University’s 70th annual Pi Mu Epsilon Interscholastic Mathematics Contest.

Potsdam High School remained the top team for the fifth year in a row, winning the Pi Mu Epsilon cup. Ben Miller, a senior at Potsdam, was the individual gold medalist for the third straight year. Ben has also been accepted to the Class of 2018 at St. Lawrence. Nathan Gingrich, also a senior at Potsdam, won the silver and was also the silver medalist last year. Andrew Jenkins, a senior at Colton-Pierrepont Junior-Senior High School, won the bronze medal.

Each school has the opportunity to send teams with up to five students. Students take an individual exam then work together in teams on a set of math problems. St. Lawrence University students who are members of Pi Mu Epsilon proctor and help grade the exams, so that results can be announced when teams return from having dinner at the University’s Dana Dining Center. Each team’s score depends on the top three scorers from a school in addition to the points earned in the team portion of the exam.

Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to the top three overall scorers on the individual portion of the exam. The contest also also recognizes the top scorer on each team as well as the top three teams.

The annual contest is sponsored each year by St. Lawrence’s Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics together with the University’s Pi Mu Epsilon chapter, the national mathematics honorary society. Winners who later choose to attend St. Lawrence are eligible to receive the Robert G. Cromie scholarship. The scholarship, named after a former math faculty member, is awarded to the top senior, while other scholarships options are available for the top three non-seniors.
