Marine construction company boat sinks in Morristown Bay

MORRISTOWN - After being left in the water all winter a boat owned by TIMIS Inc. Drilling and Marine Construction, Alexandria Bay, sunk in the Morristown Bay as the ice retreated with the arrival of warm weather.

Timothy Beebe, owner of TIMIS Inc., said the boat sunk after getting held down by ice and filled with water from the wind.

“It didn’t get crushed by the ice,” he said. “It’s absolutely fine.”

Mr. Beebe said the company had been working on docks at the Dockside Resorts when the ice filled up the bay.

Two boats were left in the water, one secured in a more sheltered part of the municipal docks and one tied to the retaining wall near the village boat launch.

Mr. Beebe said he wasn’t worried about leaving the boats in the water over the winter.

“I do it all the time,” he said of leaving the boats. “These are big work boats.”

Mayor Cheryl A. Shatraw said company officials assured her that the boats would be able to withstand the winter, though she said she would have preferred to see them removed.

Mrs. Shatraw noted that the company was working through the winter – weather permitting – at the Dockside Resorts docks which were damaged in a storm last fall.

Mr. Beebe said he emptied the fuel tanks before leaving them, although a small amount of transmission and engine oil leaked into the water.

“It was not a big deal,” he said. “Everything is fine.”

TIMIS Inc. pulled the boat out of the water on Monday morning.
