MASSENA - Along with emerging as the dominant competitor for his weight class in Section 10 over the course of his varsity career, Massena Central junior Nolan Terrance has been busily enhancing his national and international wrestling resume over the last month.

The Akwesasne resident capped an outstanding 2013-14 season by sharing Most Valuable Wrestler honors for the Raiders along with teammate Nate Marshall. The award was announced at the annual post-season banquet hosted on March 30 by the Massena Elks Club.

Terrance, who was unbeaten in the 285-pound division in helping to lead Massena to the NAC and Section 10 Division I regular season titles, wasn’t there to receive the coveted honor because he was competing at the 2014 National High School Coaches Association National Championships at the Virginia Beach Convention Center where he went 2-2 against his four opponents with all four bouts ending in pins.

The following weekend, Terrance headed to the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario, for the 2014 ASIC’s Cadet Juvenile Canadian Wrestling Championships. Competing at 130 kilograms, he captured top honors in the Greco-Roman division and finished second in the Freestyle Division.

Shortly after returning from the Canadian championships, Terrance was invited to attend the annual season-ending banquet for Massena Junior Wrestling where he was hailed for his efforts.

“We had Nolan stand up in front of all the kids at the banquet and I told them - ‘This is what your goal as a wrestler in Massena is. There is no higher award here than being named Most Valuable Wrestler of the varsity team. This is what you hope to achieve.’,” said Raider coach Scott Perrine.

“Nolan has become one of the most coachable kids I’ve ever had here. It took a little while for us to get used to each other but once he started listening to us, he started winning and he continues to do very well,” he added. “He has absolutely been a great asset to our program.”

Terrance’s wrestling career began just four short years ago. Already showing potential on the football field as a lineman, he got his first experience on the mat during gym class as an eighth-grader.

“They were doing a wrestling unit in gym and the coaches saw me. They said I should try out for the wrestling team,” said Terrance, who was named an All-NAC Football First Team lineman for the 2013 season. “I ended up trying out and really liked it. I thought it would be a good way for me to keep in shape for football.”

“It was tough at first,” he recalled. “I lost my first 10 matches but the coaches kept telling me to stick with it. I started winning and started having more fun. What I like most is that wreslters always have to give 100 percent and they can’t really rely on anyone else when they’re out on the mat. You feel a lot of pride in that. I just want to get better and better.”

Terrance once again plans to be a lineman for the Cornwall Wildcats of the Ontario Varsity Football League throughout the summer months before the Massena varsity football practice season gets underway in mid-August. He will also be regularly attending open wrestling practice sessions at facilities in Plattsburgh and near Montreal as a way to get ready to compete at a national tournament in Binghamton this coming May and at the North American Indiginous Games in Regina, Saskatchewan, the week of July 20-27.

Terrance’s parents are Jason and Alexandra David. He has a 15-year old brother, Mitchell David, who is a freshman at Massena Central, and a two and a-half year old sister, Hadley David.
