Waddington woman charged with stealing Family Resource Center credit card

WADDINGTON - A Waddington woman charged with using a debit card to run up over $3,700 in bills around the county has been jailed after being charged Saturday with six felony counts and three misdemeanors.

Massena-based state police charged April M. Streeter, 23, of 207 Halfway House Road, Waddington, with two counts of fourth-degree grand larceny, four counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and three counts of petit larceny. The charges were filed in connection with incidents that occurred in the town of Waddington, village of Canton, town of Potsdam, village of Massena and city of Ogdensburg.

She reportedly used a credit card that belonged to Waddington Family Resource Center, a non-profit organization, and ran up over $3,700 in charges.

Streeter, in statement she signed for police, said she was running low on cash and went looking for money in her mother’s purse. She said she located a checkbook inside the purse and found a debit card. She said she also located the card’s personal identification number.

The Waddington woman said she took the card with her to work at United Helpers in Heuvelton that day, but didn’t use it until the next day. She said she recalled using the card at the Nice and Easy store in Canton and at other gas stations and stores as well. She said she had also withdrawn cash from the ATM at Community Bank in Canton as well as at the Canton Sunoco.

“I also made purchases in Ogdensburg, Morristown, Hermon, Dekalb, Potsdam, Massena, Hogansburg and Clifton Springs. I do not know the total amount I spent or withdrew in any of the towns. I used the card each day for a week until April 10. My mom called me asking if I took the Resource Center card. I told her that I didn’t take it. I then threw the card away out of the window,” she said, noting she was in Ogdensburg at the time.

Edythe M. Streeter, Waddington, told troopers she had discovered the Resource Center’s card was missing on April 10. She said she called the bank to inform them to the card was missing and then went to the bank on April 11 to complete paperwork.

“It was at this time it was found out that the card had been used several times between April 4 to April 10. (They) showed me pictures of the individual who made all of the transactions. I identified the woman as my daughter,” the volunteer director of the Family Resource Center said.

She said a review of the Waddington Family Resource Center account revealed $3,753.20 had been spent or withdrawn using the stolen card.

“At no time did I ever give April permission to take the card from my purse and make any kinds of purchases with the card,” the elder Ms. Streeter said.

Streeter was arraigned by Massena Town Justice Gerald P. Sharlow and sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $2,500 cash.
