Toxicology report concludes convicted Watertown man died of cyanide poisoning

WATERTOWN — A toxicology report has confirmed that Jon K. Massey died of cyanide poisoning after learning of his sexual abuse conviction.

Mr. Massey, 52, of Watertown, collapsed outside the Jefferson County Court complex Feb. 28 after being found guilty at trial of two counts each of first-degree criminal sexual act and second-degree course of sexual conduct against a child. He died two days later at Samaritan Medical Center.

A court worker reported Mr. Massey had put something in his mouth upon the rendering of the verdict and he told a court officer that he ingested cyanide.

With the completion of the toxicology report, sheriff’s detectives have closed their investigation of the death. The investigation did not conclude how Mr. Massey obtained the drug.
