Marine construction company boat sinks in Morristown Bay

MORRISTOWN — After being docked all winter, a boat owned by TIMIS Inc. Drilling and Marine Construction, Alexandria Bay, sank in the St. Lawrence River at Morristown Bay as the ice retreated with the arrival of warm weather.

Timothy Beebe, owner of TIMIS Inc., said the boat sank after being held down by ice and filling with water blown by the wind.

“It didn’t get crushed by the ice,” he said. “It’s absolutely fine.”

Mr. Beebe said the company had been working on docks at the Dockside Resorts condominiums when the bay iced over.

Two boats were left in the water, one secured in a sheltered part of the municipal docks and one tied to the retaining wall near the village boat launch.

Mr. Beebe said he wasn’t worried about leaving the boats in the water over the winter.

“I do it all the time,” he said. “These are big work boats.”

Mayor Cheryl A. Shatraw said company officials assured her the boats would withstand the winter, though she said she would have preferred to see them removed.

Mrs. Shatraw said the company was working through the winter, weather permitting, to repair fall storm damage to the docks at Dockside Resorts.

Mr. Beebe said he emptied the fuel tanks before leaving them docked, although a small amount of transmission and engine oil leaked into the water.

“It was not a big deal,” he said. “Everything is fine.”

TIMIS pulled the boat out of the water Monday morning.

State Department of Environmental Conservation spokesman Stephen W. Litwhiler said DEC officials are aware of the spill and are keeping tabs on the area to make sure it’s cleaned up appropriately.
