POTSDAM — The SUNY Potsdam and St. Lawrence men’s lacrosse teams traded hard checks and scoring surges in an physical battle reminiscent of a playoff atmosphere on Wednesday night at Maxcy Turf Field.

Despite being a non-conference tilt, the Bears and Saints showed plenty of high emotions and raucous intensity that extended from the playing field and onto each team’s sidelines.

But it was a game-changing third quarter that gave St. Lawrence a 10-5 win to snap the Bears’ four-game winning streak with chilly temperatures that dipped into the 20s during play.

St. Lawrence snatched the lead back from Potsdam in the opening nine seconds of the second half and went on to outscore the Bears 5-0 in the defining quarter. Fowler scored twice in the first one minute and 20 seconds to give the Saints its’ first two-goal lead.

Doherty narrowly missed out on another potential goal when his shot flung off the goal post around the 10-minute mark of the quarter.

Instead of a goal for the Bears, the Saints were able to capitalize by picking up the groundball, making good on the clear attempt and scoring again on a Conor Healy goal. Charls Hurlock added another goal to push the lead to 9-4.

The Bears went 37:38 between goals before Derek Frost (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored on a feed from Bonafede. The Saints held a lofty advantage on face offs (12-17) and shots on goal (47-26 advantage).

Junior Charlie Jennings got the Saints on the board first just 1:12 into the game.

Bears sophomore attacker Ed Doherty (Amherst, N.Y.) evened it at 1-1 at 11:19. Sophomore Pat Bonafede (Churchville, N.Y.) put Potsdam ahead 2-1 at 9:06 on a helper from Jon Woodworth (Carthage, N.Y.).

Potsdam displayed physicality with aggressive checks and patiently worked the ball on offense before Doherty wound up to rip a blazing shot on a nice crossing pass from Matt Moran to make it a 3-1 Potsdam advantage.

In the second quarter, Potsdam (8-4) added to its lead when Rob Kunz (Watertown, N.Y.) notched his 20th goal of the season.

St. Lawrence got right back into it, however, as Saints’ top scorer Tommy Hovey made his presence known almost immediately after Kunz’s goal by getting on the board. Senior Pierson Fowler followed by whipping it into the net to cut it to 4-3 with 3:23 left and sophomore Charlie Duprey knotted it at 4-4 with less than two minutes to play in the half.

The Saints (8-3) held a 21-12 shots advantage and had won seven of nine face offs at the break.

Potsdam will host SUNY Oneonta on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in a SUNYAC game on Senior Day.

SUNY CANTON

A six-goal first quarter sent the Lakers (6-6) on their way to a 21-6 win over SUNY Canton in a nonconference contest in Oswego.

Nick Giampaolo scored four goals for the Lakers. Cody Hoose, Torry Whitcher, Jordan Michele and Jimmy Cordon each produced two.

Tanner Pratt led SUNY Canton (3-7) with three goals. Garrett DiTullio, Devin Gruneisen and Trevor Wright added single goals.
