CARTHAGE Bassett-Baxter American Legion Post 789, 415 West St., is being used as a shelter for those displaced because of flooding along the Black River.
The Red Cross opened the shelter about 7 p.m. Wednesday, and provided each resident with a cot, blanket, food and personal hygiene items.
The Red Cross said about 15 homes have been evacuated because of the flooding, and the shelter will remain open until all residents can return safely to their homes.
Volunteers from the Northern New York, Central New York and Mohawk Valley Red Cross chapters are assisting residents at the shelter.
Our volunteers stand ready to provide the residents with food, a warm place to sleep and other essentials theyll need until theyre able to return home, said Jane G. Gendron, community executive of the American Red Cross of Northern New York.
And even after they leave the shelter, our volunteers will remain available to provide them with the support and referrals theyll need to repair their homes and lives, she said.
