Morristown moves ahead with village garage construction

MORRISTOWN — The village is moving forward with a plan to build a village garage that will house the Department of Public Works and the village offices. The new structure will be near the current village barn at Gouverneur and Northumberland streets.

With work likely to total $150,000, the village is soliciting bids to pour the building’s foundation, Superintendent of Public Works Kevin J. Crosby said.

Mayor Cheryl A. Shatraw said she doesn’t expect the project to be finished this year because the priority for the construction season is the road bypassing Morristown Bay. She said the village hopes to have a substantial portion of the work complete so it can be finished easily in 2015.

“Our goal this year is to at least have it framed in so that we can work on it during the winter,” Mr. Crosby said.

Public Works will complete as much of the project as possible to keep costs down, Ms. Shatraw said.

The building will replace the village barn, which is aging and no longer large enough to house all of the village’s equipment.

The new barn will have two 10-foot garage doors and two 12-foot doors, Mr. Crosby said.

There also will be a 30-by-20-foot space that can be used by the village for new office space. It hasn’t been determined whether the barn will be used as the village’s primary office space.
