New fitness center opens at St. Lawrence Centre

MASSENA — After operating a gym in his basement last summer, John Roder has expanded his business by opening The Temple, a fitness center at the St. Lawrence Centre mall.

“It just took off,” Mr. Roder said. “When I first started, I had two or three clients per week. Now I have 43 clients.”

The Temple is open by appointment from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. While Mr. Roder is the only employee, he said his fiancee, Kelly Gregor, is going to school to become a nutritionist.

“We’re going to make this a family business,” he said. “This all started from a basement gym and a dream.”

Mr. Roder said he has been a certified personal trainer for 15 years, starting his career at the Mirror Lake Inn at Lake Placid.

“When I first got certified and began working in Lake Placid, I fell in love with working out,” he said. Sharing that passion with others is something he really enjoys.

“When people come up to me and thank me for what I’m doing for them, it’s a great feeling,” Mr. Roder said.

To make an appointment, call Mr. Roder at 842-6288.
