POTSDAM A double from Lindsey Welsh scored Kat Tamburro with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving the Clarkson University softball team the first win in the history of the program Thursday in an 8-7 decision over SUNY Potsdam in the second game of a nonconference doubleheader.
Clarkson (1-19 overall) fell 2-1 to the Bears in the opening game. It was also the first set of games played at the schools new Scott field.
Winning pitcher Jamie Bridge (11 strikeouts) also went 4-for-4 for Clarkson in the second game.
Katie Pelton and Ali Schwenzfeier each produced two hits. Brittany Thivierge went 3-for-4 for the Bears (2-14) in game two and Kelly Becker went 2-for-4.
Megan Johnson was the winning pitcher in the opener for SUNY Potsdam, striking out six and allowing three hits.
ST. LAWRENCE 3-8, SUNY CANTON 1-5
Kyle Plimpton threw a one-hitter and struck out 14 in the opening game of a nonconference doubleheader as the Saints defeated SUNY Canton (4-13) at SLU.
Natasha Bell and Marissa Boyer each went 3-for-4 in game two for the Saints (7-13).
Aisha OConnor, Nicole Matthews and Rebecca Allen each produced two-hit games in the nightcap.
Matthews also drove in four runs. Jordan Podkladek went 2-for-2 for the Kangaroos and Shannon Dowling drove in three runs.
FULTON-MONTOMERY CC 4-7, JEFFERSON CC 1-4
The Cannoneers allowed two runs in the seventh inning to drop game one, gave up three runs in the 10th to lose the second game and got swept in their home opener at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.
Kyle Simmons doubled in the first game and threw seven strong innings in game two for Jefferson Community College (6-11 overall, 2-6 Region 3 East Division).
Simmons, Elliot Martin, Jason Hardie and James Smith each collected a pair of hits in the second game for JCC.
Dennis Buckley surrendered two hits and went the distance in game one for Fulton-Montgomery CC (10-11, 5-2).
