Former Harrisville man jailed in New Jersey after alleged robberies

HARRISVILLE — A former Harrisville resident was behind bars Friday after he was arrested by three police departments on felony robbery and weapons charges.

According to news reports from, James J. Jeffrey, 21, of Route 812, was arrested Monday after an alleged three-week string of armed robberies and burglaries in New Jersey.

The spree began March 26, when Mr. Jeffrey robbed a taxi driver at knife point in the town of Old Bridge, taking money, a cellphone and the victim’s wallet, the site reported.

Mr. Jeffrey then threatened a cashier of an Old Bridge 7-Eleven store with a knife the morning of April 12, Matawan-Aberdeen Patch reported.

The next day, he reportedly robbed a gas station in the borough of Matawan, again threatening the cashier with a knife.

Following an attempt to break into a Matawan residence Monday, Mr. Jeffrey stole a motorcycle in Middletown township, the report said.

When Middletown police attempted to stop him for a traffic violation about noon Monday, he fled, eventually crashed and was taken into custody, according to a report.

Matawan, Old Bridge and Middletown police charged him with felonies including robbery, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, receiving stolen property and eluding.

He is being held in the Monmouth County Jail on $272,500 cash bail, with no 10 percent option. In New Jersey, a 10 percent option is sometimes given to defendants, with release on a refundable post of that portion of the total cash bail.
