Yolanda Skvorak to be honored by Carthage Hospital Auxiliary

CARTHAGE — The Carthage Area Hospital Auxiliary will honor longtime member Yolanda M. Skvorak as Senior Volunteer of the Year.

The award will be presented at the group’s annual meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at Meadowbrook Terrace, 21957 Cole Road.

“It’s nice to be recognized,” the honoree said. “We all work collaboratively. It’s not a committee of one. I am humbled to be selected from among those who have been chosen in the past for the work we do.”

Mrs. Skvorak, two-term auxiliary president, has served in numerous other capacities during her 19 years in the organization.

Having joined the auxiliary because of a “desire to work to help the hospital,” she soon was “anxious to be on committees to do what I could.”

She was a driving force of the “Fall in Fashion” shows that for many years showcased clothing from area stores.

“It was our number one fundraiser and most lucrative,” Mrs. Skvorak said.

Now, Mrs. Skvorak is spearheading a dinner theater event to replace the fashion show. The show, featuring Carthage native Jane Bowman Jenkins, is set for May 9 at the Sahara Restaurant in Fargo.

In addition to being president, Mrs. Skvorak has been publicity chairwoman and a member of the Ways and Means Committee.

She also is secretary of the Carthage Music Club, president of the Carthage Area Senior Citizens, a 25-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a lector and greeter at St. James Catholic Church, a bowler with the Carthage Senior Citizens League and a member of the Town of Wilna Housing Authority, town Zoning Board of Appeals, Deferiet Senior Citizens Club and Red Hat Society. She is a former member and past regent of the Daughters of Isabella and a past member and secretary of the Town of Wilna Planning Board.

She is married to Francis M. Skvorak; they have three children, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Their son, Francis M. Jr., and his wife, Gwen, live in Gloversville; their daughters and their husbands, Yolanda M. and Kevin Esslinger and Carol A. and Eric Burke, live in Carthage.

During the annual meeting, Richard Duvall, Carthage Area Hospital chief operating officer, will talk about the recent developments at the local health care facility.
