WATERTOWN — The Watertown City Council is expected to award contracts tonight for a nearly $1 million project to upgrade its municipal water-distribution system.

The $974,000 project aims to increase the city’s water distribution capacity by installing 3,000 linear feet of a new 16-inch water main.

The project is anticipated to improve the peak flow deliveries from city reservoirs, reduce discharge pressures on the municipal water treatment plant’s water pumps and improve water-transmission reliability and redundancy.

In addition to the parallel main, the plan calls for a 10-foot-wide asphalt walking/maintenance trail along the pipe corridor and replacement of the valve vault for the city’s Eastern Reservoir.

At tonight’s council meeting, city officials will decide whether to take out a five-year loan to pay GHD Consulting Engineers LLC, Cazenovia, $58,400 for the designs and hire North Country Contractors LLC, Calcium, for the $875,000 construction work.

The remaining $66,600 of the total project cost covers bonding fees and contingency funds. The projected debt service for the 2013-14 fiscal year is $99,667.

Also tonight, the council will consider awarding a $194,000 contract to Bette & Cring Inc., Watertown, to repair the Arch Street arch near the Veterans Memorial Riverwalk Park.
