HOPKINTON - A 52-year-old concrete landing area at the top of the Hopkinton Town Hall steps will soon be receiving a makeover.

Town officials announced Monday evening that construction will begin on Thursday and is expected to conclude in early May.

“It has been deteriorating on both sides and it cannot be fixed, it cannot be repaired. So (the work) is taking out that whole (section), digging down further and starting from the ground up,” Councilwoman Susan Lyon said. “I think it’s been repaired one other time, but I think the platform has been there for quite a while.”

In March, board members elected to hire Coots Masonry to complete the labor for $6,525.26.

Work will consist of the complete removal and replacement of the landing area. New footers will be installed and railings will be reinstalled. Any shrubbery that has to be moved will be replanted with topsoil and grass seed.

“I just got a picture of the town hall today in the mail that says 1962 dated on the back of it and it looks like those same steps,” Town Clerk Vickie L. French said. “The sides of them are just totally deteriorated that it can’t be fixed.”

“Our plan is for the work to take place from April 24 to May 5. That’s a little bit longer than he anticipates, but that’s only because of the weather,” Ms. Lyon added. “If it rains, then of course it’s going to get prolonged. But his goal is (to finish) the first of May and to complete everything within a week.”
