Clayton Community Band opens season May 6 with “And the Band Played On”

CLAYTON — The Clayton Community Band will open its 2014 season at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the Clayton Opera House.

“... And the Band Played On” concert will be the first performance of the group since the retirement of founding director Gloria H. Musser in January. The new conductor, Richard Badour of Watertown, is the musical director at Belleville Henderson Central School.

Selections for the evening’s music include “Londonderry Air,” “At Sunrise” and, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Beatles debuting in America, a selection of the their popular tunes.

This all-volunteer ensemble is made up of members of many of the communities surrounding Clayton. Reorganization of the band started in February and rehearsals began in March.

This year’s concert schedule includes a patriotic extravaganza on July 1 with additional concerts following in August, October and a holiday show in December.

Proceeds from the band’s concerts are split between the Thousand Islands Performing Arts Fund at the Clayton Opera House and a local charitable organization.

The organization selected for the proceeds at the first concert of the season is the St. Lawrence Valley Chapter of the SPCA. In addition to donating 50 percent of the ticket sales, the band will have contribution “wagons” for patrons to donate nonperishable pet food, kitty litter and other dog/cat supplies.

Tickets are available at the Clayton Opera House box office, 405 Riverside Drive, by calling 686-2200 ext. 12 or by going online at
