Clayton Hotel Job Fair opens with eager crowd, event continues today

CLAYTON — The first day of an open job fair for the Thousand Islands Harbor Hotel started with potential employees lining up before the event opened.

“There has been a lot of positive energy and a lot of people coming in excited to work in the Clayton community,” said Hart Hotels Inc.’s Vice President of Operations Alan P. Incorvaia.

The recruitment fair aims to fill more than 130 job openings at the 105-room luxury hotel, which is being built on the former Frink snowplow factory site near the Clayton River Walk and docks. Scheduled to open July 1, the hotel is hiring for various positions throughout the facility.

Linda Costello, director of human resources for the Hart Hotels Company, said when she and her colleagues walked into O’Brien’s restaurant Tuesday morning there were already several job candidates waiting to interview.

“We’ve had over 286 people apply online, and we sent out email blasts to everyone to let them know we’d be holding this event,” Ms. Costello said. She said they also advertised in local newspapers and on Internet sites like Craigslist.

“We are seeing a good amount of people despite the rain,” Ms. Costello said. “Tomorrow we’ll be here again from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and hopefully get the chance to meet a whole new group.”

Ms. Costello said many of the applicants came in to inquire about front desk positions, maintenance and jobs in the restaurant and catering side.

Ms. Costello said staff won’t be hired on the spot. She said after all applicants have been interviewed, the most qualified applicants will be called back for a second interview with different managers. She said they will hire following those interviews.

This will be the second job fair for the hotel. Ms. Costello said an invitation-only event was held April 9 for candidates who applied online. Of 160 invited, she said, 90 were interviewed.

Mr. Incorvaia said the applicants have come from the Clayton community and some have come in saying they hope by getting a job in the area they will be able to return to their hometown.

“This is their hotel in their community and they’re enthusiastic about being a part of it,” Mr. Incorvaia said.

He said management hopes to hire the best local staff to help the hotel achieve a four diamond rating through triple-A.

“The four-diamond rate service level you would expect at a nice hotel,” Mr. Incorvaia said.

Available positions include front desk clerks, night auditor, night audit clerks, bell persons, housekeeping attendants, laundry attendants, room inspectors, maintenance workers, valet attendants and dock master.

The hotel also will be hiring staff for its restaurant, bar and banquet facility, including servers, a host/hostess, bartenders, bussers, a banquet captain, banquet servers, porters, bar backs, prep cooks, line cooks, banquet cooks, dishwashers and night cleaners.

Mr. Incorvaia said the hotel is scheduled to open by July but to be on the safe side no reservations are being accepted earlier than Aug. 15.

Mr. Incorvaia said that most of the heavy work of constructing the hotel is complete.

“Most of the hard construction is done, now it’s on to the finishing work,” he said.

Things left to be finished are installation of drywall, floor mouldings, plumbing, carpet and more.

Mr. Incorvaia said the owners “picked the wrong winter to start working.” Despite the cold and snow, he said the project will be completed within a year of it’s ground breaking.
