West Carthage Housing Authority says it’s moving forward

WEST CARTHAGE — Ronald J. Novak, acting chairman of the West Carthage Housing Authority board of directors, told the board Monday that he and Executive Director Brian J. Wohnsiedler are “taking care of business.”

The Housing Authority and its board of directors have undergone many changes in the past month, with Mr. Wohnsiedler being fired, then rehired and several board members resigning.

Former housing manager Sarah J. Millard, who resigned last month but whose resignation was not accepted by the board, submitted a new resignation that was accepted.

The board established a hiring committee consisting of Mr. Wohnsiedler, Mr. Novak and board member Mary M. Britton to interview the three candidates supplied by Civil Service for the senior typist position to assist the executive director. Mr. Novak said the other board members would be welcome to sit in on the interviews. The board agreed the hiring committee would have the authority to offer the position to an acceptable candidate.

Mr. Wohnsiedler reported he has been reviewing applications to fill the vacancy available through the U.S. Rural Development portion of the Housing Authority.

At present the board consists of only four members, Mr. Novak, Mrs. Britton, Todd C. Norrgard and Michael Bigness. The board agreed Mr. Novak should continue as chairman until the village Board of Trustees nominates additional members; then a vote can be taken for officers.

The Housing Authority board also discussed the possibility of shrinking the board to five members instead of seven since Public Housing Administration law requires a board of three to seven members. He said the board had five members before the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development mandate requiring a tenant representative. At that time Mrs. Britton joined the board and another member was added to allow for majority votes.
