CLAYTON An Arbor Day celebration will be held at the Zenda Farm Preserve with tree planting, family fun activities and community pledges to nurture the environment.
This is a call for the community to really celebrate Arbor Day, do crafts and plant some trees, said Corinne R. Mockler, Thousand Islands Land Trust coordinator of education and outreach.
The festivities will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Zenda Farm Preserve, Route 12E just outside the village.
Mrs. Mockler said TILT has held the tree planting for five years. Last year was the first attempt to make it a true celebration.
They have been doing the tree planting for a few years, but I really felt there could be more done, she said. Last year, Mrs. Mockler said, about 75 people came to the activity-packed event.
This year, community volunteers, LaFargeville Cub Scout Pack 74 and other children will plant a mix of white pine, spruce and oak seedlings along the walking trails and wooded areas on the preserve. Children will be able to take home crafts.
Well be planting trees, large and small, and there will be a variety of kids activities, Mrs. Mockler said.
She said Cross Islands Farms, Wellesley Island, is expected to bring some of its farm animals for the community to see. Northern Rivers Protogrove will hold an interpretive dance workshop for the children and volunteers to emulate the spirit of the trees.
The children also will pledge to help the trees and the environment. Were going to let them decide what to pledge, Mrs. Mockler said. Well take their pledges and put them up in the office.
Festivities will conclude with a free showing of the animated film Wall-E at noon at the Clayton Library, 220 John St.
Subway of Clayton is providing lunch for volunteers. Mrs. Mockler said preregistration is appreciated so lunch can be ordered, but anyone is welcome to drop in.
Zenda is open to the public and so we want everyone to come out, she said.
Mrs. Mockler said organizers will give away TILT Busy Beaver volunteer T-shirts to prepare for the launch of the Volunteer Stewardship Program.
