CANTON — The former SUNY Canton student accused of setting fire to her Potsdam apartment was sent to St. Lawrence County jail Wednesday for violating her probation.

Brandi Lee Saumier, 21, of 1071 Buckton Road, Winthrop, pleaded not guilty to second-degree arson on Dec. 16 and was released on probation supervision.

Ms. Saumier is accused of having set a fire in her first-floor apartment at 28 Pierrepont Ave. on Oct. 25, knowing that others were in the building at the time. Nine people escaped unharmed from the blaze that destroyed the building.

In court Wednesday, County Judge Jerome J. Richards said Ms. Saumier tested positive for THC and benzodiazepines on Feb. 27 and April 10. She also made admissions to probation officials to smoking marijuana, Judge Richards said.

Ms. Saumier’s attorney, Edward F. Narrow, said she had been involved in outpatient treatment for chemical dependency and asked the judge if he would release her under continued probation supervision pending further treatment recommendations.

“The court declined to take action the first time,” Judge Richards said about the February positive test. “She continues to smoke marijuana and has been smoking marijuana right along.”

Ms. Saumier was sent to St. Lawrence County jail without bail and the matter was adjourned to May 14.
