Cattleman’s Restaurant in Morristown is on the market with owner looking for a qualified buyer


MORRISTOWN — Cattleman’s, a former restaurant that village residents have hoped to see make a comeback, is being marketed aggressively by owner Mahlon T. Clements in hopes of finding a new owner.

The restaurant last year was nearly purchased and reopened by a Syracuse restaurateur, but that deal fell through.

The restaurant has been empty since the summer of 2013 after a brief spell when it was run by John G. Hagopian.

Syracuse resident Michael J. Kinney held a public meeting in December seeking input from town residents about whether they wanted the restaurant to reopen and how they would like to see it operate.

Mr. Kinney ran the restaurant in 2003 and 2004 and said he was excited by the possibility of buying it from Mr. Clements and making it the St. Lawrence River-front destination of his dreams.

“It’s got a million-dollar view,” Mr. Kinney said in December of the restaurant that overlooks Morristown Bay and the St. Lawrence River.

Despite an outpouring of community support for the project, it was not to be. Mr. Kinney said he had to cancel his plans because of family commitments in Syracuse.

“I was heartbroken,” he said. “I really wanted to come back.”

Mr. Clements said the restaurant’s location is a prime selling point, and said it’s a shame to see the place sit vacant.

The building is listed at $375,000. Mr. Clements said he is willing to “consider any reasonable offer” for it and would be willing to rent it again to the right person.

“Running a restaurant properly is hard work and it takes some skills.” he said.

Several people have approached Mr. Clements about the building.

Mr. Clements has owned the property for more than a decade, and after a short time running the restaurant himself, he has leased it to others.

“I got involved [with the property] for the same reason that everyone else did: we really need a great restaurant in the community and it’s a great location,” he said.

The bottom line: “We’ve got to get it open,” he said. “This is a beautiful view.”
