Fire departments in eastern Jefferson County looking for recruits


A statewide initiative this weekend will create awareness and interest for volunteer fire departments in the eastern half of Jefferson County.

The RecruitNY Program encourages departments to host open houses with demonstrations of firefighting techniques and exhibits of fire equipment.

The following departments will host open houses:

n Black River Fire Department, 218 Leray St., 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Sunday. Meet members of the fire department, see their equipment, and watch a Jaws of Life demonstration at 2 p.m. today.

n Carthage Fire Department, 685 S. James St., 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

There will be aerial truck rides, 911 signs available for sale, fire extinguisher and smoke detector information and equipment displays and demonstrations.

In addition the Auxiliary will host a bake sale and the Nighthawks Firematics Drill Team will host a chicken barbecue.

n Deferiet Volunteer Fire Department, 101 Riverside Drive, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday There will be a display of the firematic drill team car and training demonstrations.

n Felts Mills Fire Company, 30743 State Route 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. The department will provide tours of the station, an equipment display, a chance to meet firefighters and refreshments.

n Natural Bridge Fire Company, 27570 High St., 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. Visitors can meet the firefighters and Emergency Medical Service members.

n West Carthage Fire Department, 61 High St., will host its open house next Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Natural Bridge Fire Department will be included with some of the demonstrations. There will be equipment displays and demonstrations, a bouncy house, chicken barbecue, Jaws of Life demonstration, fire extinguisher training and a drill team display.
