Massena holds off OFA for lax win

Massena’s defensive strength prevailed over OFA’s concerted improvement in Saturday’s Northern Conference Boys Lacrosse game staged at the Blue Devils’ Alton W. Elliott Memorial Athletic Complex.

The 4-2 Raiders’ defense blanked OFA (1-3) for the first 16 minutes of the second half and were optimistic on offense in recording a 9-5 victory. In other action St. Lawrence Central trimmed Potsdam 7-4 and Salmon River outscored South Burlington 12-8.

“We have been very strong defensively all year. We are only allowing five goals a game. Andrew Bender and Ross Davis do a great job leading us defensively and our backup goalie Troy Benedict stepped in and did a nice job today,” said Massena Coach Kris Covell after his team bounced back from a 7-6 loss to Canton.

“I thought both teams played very well in some tough conditions. It was really tough to keep your footing out there.”

The Raiders, who had 11 players figure in their scoring, took a 5-3 halftime lead and opened an 8-3 margin before OFA’s Taylor Richardson scored off two outstanding shots in the final four minutes.

Richardson finished with four goals on the day and Ross Driscoll tallied three goals and one assist to lead the Raiders.

“We played with great effort and we were very disciplined today. It was a very good game. Taylor Richardson scored some great goals today and Austin Morley-Sloan, Nate Peo and Andrew Putman did a great job winning faceoffs which gave us a lot of extra possessions,” said OFA Coach Matt Morley after his team was denied a chance to follow up a 10-9 win over St. Lawrence Central on Thursday.

“Their goalie made some great stops and he was a key for them today.”

Benedict finished with 13 saves on the day backed by offensive contributions from: Ryan Thomas (1 goal, 1 assist), Sako Rourke (1 goal, 2 assists), Hunter Pyke (1 assist), Jeff Bain (1 goal), Kendrick Angus (1 assist), Rhoades Tarbell (2 goals, 1 assist), Zach Koszan (1 assist), Nick Henrie (2 assists) and Cole Allen (1 goal).

Dave Prudhomme scored one goal for OFA and Peo and Andrew Roddy passed out assists to back a 10-save effort from Quinton Denner.

Salmon River 12, South Burlington Vt. 8: Kason Tarbell generated four goals and three assists and Skye Sunday tallied three goals for Salmon River which overcame a 6-3 halftime deficit. Tazz Oakes made eight saves in the defensive effort. Alan Jacobs connected for two goals and Kyle Lewis (1-1), Skylar Thomas (1-0), and Lakota Square (1-0) rounded out the offense.

Cam Nolting scored four goals and one assist and Willy Campagne connected for three goals and one assist to lead South Burlington. John Murray handled nine shots.

SLC 7, Potsdam 4: In a solid game by both defenses, the Larries gained a slight advantage of better opportunities in the win.

Marshall Burninghausen supplied three goals for the Larries. Brody Simons, Luke Collins, Jake Sutton each scored a goal and drew an assist while Stiles Arquiett added a goal.

Isaiah Lyon and Nick Randall each produced an assist for Cody Kocsis who stopped 12 shots in goal.

Josh Sanchez scored two goals and collected two assists for Potsdam.

Max Warden chipped in two goals and one assist. Keenan O’Gorman, Devin Gruinsen and Sam Woods each logged an assist.
