OGDENSBURG — The Pride and Beautification Commission will be helping to spruce up the city this spring by painting – free of charge – 917 New York Ave. Members are looking for volunteers to help out.

The project is part of the commission’s broader effort to make the city look nicer and improve attitudes about Ogdensburg.

Commission Chairwoman Mary Ann Narenkivicius said the decision to paint 917 New York Ave. was made after the homeowners – Michele and Steve Burgess – applied for the program.

“There was no income requirement,” Mrs. Narenkivicius said. “Mainly [we picked] the one that we thought would improve the neighborhood the most.”

The painting will be done on May 17 and 18 with some setup taking place on May 16.

Mrs. Narenkivicius said the commission has seen an outpouring of support from Ogdensburg’s business sector and community organizations for the project.

Lowes is supplying the paint for the project, Walmart donated a gift card to help the commission purchase supplies and the Kiwanis and Key clubs are donating their time as well as paying for the insurance necessary to cover the project.

The Salvation Army will be providing food for the volunteers.

Mrs. Narenkivicius said contractor Nick Bertrand will be around to help, offer guidance and lend some of his equipment to the effort.

“We’re very lucky,” Mrs. Narenkivicius said of the support they’ve received. “Everyone that we’ve worked at getting wanted to be on board and thought it was a very cool project. It wasn’t a hard sell at all.”

But in order to really pull off the event, Mrs. Narenkivicius said, they need a number of volunteers who are ready to come and help make the community look a little nicer.

People who are interested should call Mrs. Narenkivicius at 393-1783 or 322-2700 or email her at mnarenki@yahoo.com.

As for neighboring residences, Mrs. Narenkivicius said, “We are hoping to have a little paint left over so if there was anybody in the vicinity of this home we’d be happy to paint a porch.”
