WATERTOWN — Local officials will get a first look Wednesday at the renaissance taking place inside the Woolworth Building since a $15 million project to convert the six-story building into 50 upper-floor apartments and commercial space on the ground floor started.

Developers David J. Gallo and Erich H. Seber have invited officials to tour the building to see how construction has progressed.

Representatives from the city, Jefferson County and the Watertown City School District and members of Advantage Watertown are expected to attend.

Kenneth A. Mix, the city’s planning and community development coordinator, has not been in the building since the work began in November. But he said he expects that all of the asbestos abatement and environmental concerns have been addressed.

“I hear they’ve started renovations on some of it,” he said, adding that work has been completed on each floor.

The contracting team of Purcell-LeCesse Joint Venture is completing the work. The developers expect construction to be finished by the end of the year.

The six-story building was the F.W. Woolworth department store.

In 2009, the city applied for a $2.5 million Restore NY grant to help finance the project.

The city also sold some green space across the street on Public Square, between Cam’s Pizzeria and the Woodruff Professional Building, that will be converted into a 28-space lot for tenant parking.
