A humiliating first attempt at ice skating for Richard M. Conerly turned into $3,000, as video of his on-ice bumbling and stumbling won second place during an episode of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” that aired Sunday.

The video was shot by his wife, Allisyn G., after he asked her to take a picture of him skating at the rink at the Lewis County Fairgrounds, Lowville, earlier this year. Unbeknownst to him, she decided to switch and shoot video. “It turned out to be a masterpiece,” he said.

After his first attempt, he said, he got one of the uprights used to help children skate for the first time, which made him feel “like a professional.”

Mr. Conerly serves as a recruiting liaison at Fort Drum with the 10th Mountain Division’s Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion. Originally from Baton Rouge, La., he said ice skating wasn’t something people there learned to do growing up. After his daunting first experience, Mr. Conerly said, he wasn’t interested in trying it again. “I was so sore afterward, there was no way I could go back,” he said.

His experience, however, did give him a fresh perspective on the ice skating competition at this year’s Winter Olympics, as he watched the skating events for the first time.

“I was trying to figure out what the trick was,” Mr. Conerly said. “I don’t think I have it.”

The family, who lives in Black River, attended the taping of the episode in Hollywood about a month ago. Rules from the network prevented him from telling anyone the results until after it aired, which he admitted was difficult.

After the taping, Mr. Conerly said he was going to use the prize money to take his family on a vacation, preferably to somewhere warm.

“No more ice skating planned for me,” he said.
