EVANS MILLS LeRay officials heard critiques of the towns proposed new zoning law.
Walter H. VanTassel disagreed with several of the changes during a hearing last week. First complaining about the cost of crafting the proposal, he said the proposed law was too complex, making it impossible for residents to organize site plans without legal assistance.
This has been intentionally designed to prevent most people from creating a site plan at a reasonable cost, Mr. VanTassel said.
He also said the names of the newly crafted zoning districts were meant to confuse people, and he disagreed with the reduction in the minimum setback from 40 feet to 20 feet.
It was clarified after the meeting that the change was only for the mixed-use zoning area.
James C. Blankman asked town officials to reconsider the planned change that would allow for flag lots, which are placed behind current lots, with a piece of road extending to it. As a member of the towns Zoning Board of Appeals and Board of Assessment Review, Mr. Blankman said he had received negative feedback about such a change.
All of a sudden you have this density for people who have been there for years, he said after the meeting.
Town Supervisor Ronald C. Taylor said the earliest the changes could be approved would be the towns June meeting.
After the meeting, Mr. Taylor disagreed with Mr. VanTassels claim that the zoning law was too complex, noting the new regulations consolidate the number of zoning districts.
Its simpler than it was before, he said.
