DEXTER- John E. Switzer, 83, of Breezy Knoll Trailer Park, died Thursday morning, April 24, at Hospice of Jefferson County at Ellis Farm, Watertown.
He was born in 1930 in Denmark, NY. He enlisted in the Navy in 1948 working as an aircraft mechanic and was Honorably Discharged in 1955 after receiving numerous medals including the Korean Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal. He married Gertrude Trudy L. McIntosh in 1958. After discharge from the service John worked in the Great Lakes dredging before finally settling into dairy farming. First operating a dairy farm on the Deferno Road in Clayton in the 1960s before moving operations to the Millens Bay Road Farm until a 1970 fire forced a move once more to the Dodge Bay Farm in Cape Vincent where John finished out his farming career. He enjoyed stock car races, snowmobiling, the Old Time Fiddlers, as well as many a fun night spent with family and friends at the farm kitchen table. Upon retirement John and Trudy moved to the Breezy Knoll Trailer Park in Dexter in the early 90s and had lived there since. John then worked many seasons for the Thousand Island Bridge Authority as a grounds keeper.
John is survived by his youngest son Richard Switzer, who has lived with John for many years, and in recent years provided great assistance for Johns daily living activities. John is also survived by eldest son Marc and wife Sally Switzer. His wife, Trudy predeceased John in 2012. All of his six siblings also passed before him.
A Celebration of Life Gathering in his honor will be scheduled at a later date as well as a grave side ceremony.
