CANTON — The St. Lawrence University baseball team built a big lead and then held off a late rally to defeat SUNY Canton 11-9 in a nonconference game at Tom Fay Field on Monday.

The Saints (15-12 overall) led 10-0 after two innings, thanks to a nine-run second. SUNY Canton (15-16) scored three runs in the seventh and eighth, cutting the lead to 10-9 before the Saints added a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Mark Syron led SLU’s offense, going 3-for-3, including a triple and home run. He also drove in three runs. Bryan Palermo, Khifer O’Connor and Chris Fernandez each produced two hits.

Austin Hernandez, Phil Tsiaras and Jesse Barton each lined three hits for the Kangaroos. Kevin Hill and Braden Giffin each picked up two hits.

n Hannah Sears was the winning pitcher in the first game and drove in the game-winning run in the second as the Saints swept SUNY Potsdam in a nonconference softball doubleheader in Canton. SLU won the opener 4-0 and took game two 1-0 on Sears’s hit with one out in the bottom of the seventh that drove in Rebecca Allen.

Sears went 2-for-3 in the opener for the Saints (15-19) and drove in two runs. Kyle Plimpton threw a one-hitter in game two with 10 strikeouts. Leslie Stratton and Aisha O’Connor each lined two hits. Jordan Ott went 2-for-4 for the Bears in game one and had the only hit for SUNY Potsdam (5-25) in game two.
