Ties for award: Jerry J. Bartlett, Colton, hit 200 miles per gallon in the Toyota Green Grand Prix. Mr. Bartlett, 2004 alumnus and the learning systems manager for SUNY Canton OnLine, tied for most fuel-efficient vehicle in the Toyota Green Grand Prix Doris Bovee Memorial Road Rally, held April 11 at the Watkins Glen International Racetrack. He entered the race with his modified Urba Centurion and donated his $1,000 prize back to the Green Grand Prix, a non-profit corporation.

Honored: Two SUNY Canton students were recently honored with Chancellor’s Awards for Student Excellence.

Meghan P. Gibson, sports management major, has also received an award for highest grade point average in her major in 2011 and was listed on either president’s or dean’s list for the past three years. She worked as a student supervisor during the 2013 USCAA National Volleyball Championships and for the athletic department. She was a summer camp counselor for the Oswegatchie Educational Center and was a summer soccer coach at Niagara University. Ms. Gibson completed her senior internship with SUNY Cobleskill’s sports information department and is a member of SUNY Canton’s student outdoor adventure club.

Lydia C. Dale, graphic and multimedia design major, has also received academic awards for highest grade point average in her discipline in 2011 and 2012 and the Canino Prize for Academic Excellence in 2012. She is vice president of the college’s branch of American Institute for Graphic Arts and was a graphic design intern in the college’s public relations department. She has been a volunteer art teacher for the Christian Fellowship Academy, Madrid, and worked on set designs for college productions. She received several awards for her work in the college’s juried art shows and is a published photographer and illustrator.

Honored: Jan DeWaters, engineering instructor at Clarkson University, Potsdam, recently received the Women in Engineering Division of the American Society for Engineering Education’s EEEFG Award in recognition of achievements in improving engineering education and pathways for women into engineering careers.

The award covers expenses to attend the 2014 Annual Conference of the American Society for Engineering Education this June in Indiana. Ms. DeWaters is an academic advisor for undecided first-year engineering students and faculty adviser for the chapter of the Society of Women Engineers. She also volunteers with youth education programs and outreach and mentoring programs for middle and high school girls.

Inducted: Raina K. Puels, Dexter, was recently inducted into the Irving Bacheller Society, the English department’s honorary society at St. Lawrence University, Canton. Miss Puels, sophomore English major at SLU, is a graduate of General Brown Central School, Dexter.

Inducted: Kathryn DePerrior, Watertown, was recently inducted into the Nazareth College, Rochester, chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon Honor Society. She is majoring in business administration with a minor in accounting, human resource management.

Scholarships

Scholarship: Andrea Westervelt, senior at Clarkson University, Potsdam, was recently awarded a National Science Foundation graduate research fellowship. The award given to Ms. Westervelt, a mechanical engineering major from Brookfield, Conn., will cover full tuition for graduate school, annual stipend of $32,000 and research funding for three years. She plans to attend Columbia University, New York City. Ms. Westervelt is a calculus and physic tutor, senior class vice president, senator for the student association and works with school children in Lisbon through an educational outreach program.
