MASSENA – Mrs. Emily MacPherson, 96, a lifelong resident of Massena, died Tuesday (April 29, 2014) at the Maplewood Campus Nursing Home in Canton. Friends and family are invited to call on Sunday (May 04, 2014) from 4-7 PM at the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday (May 5, 2014) at St. Mary’s Church, Massena with Rev. Jack Downs officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Massena.

Born at home on a family farm a few miles east of Massena on March 12, 1918, she was the daughter of the late William and Flora (White) Fregoe. She graduated from Massena High School on Bridges Avenue, and on February 3, 1941 was married to her beloved husband, Vernon MacPherson at Sacred Heart Church in Massena. She worked briefly at the old Montgomery Ward mail order office on Andrews Street. When Vernon was called away to serve in the U.S. Army during the Second World War, Emily substituted during his vacancy at the Massena Post Office. After taking time to raise her children at home, she began a new career as a loan officer at the National Bank of Northern New York (now the Key Bank). She especially enjoyed working with young people, while helping them obtain college loans.

Emily and Vernon were enthusiastic dancers and were members of the Seaway Squares Dance Club and the Canton Carousel Round Dance Club. Emily enjoyed cooking, sewing, golf, card games, and identifying wildflowers. She loved her family, the people of Massena, the North Country, her home on Roosevelt Street, corn-on-the-cob, and fresh strawberries. She was an active parishioner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Emily and Vernon reached an extraordinary milestone in February of 2011 when they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Emily will be dearly missed by the many people whose lives she touched. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a wonderful grandmother.

Emily is survived by her son Brian and his wife Donna of Burlington, VT; her daughter Patrice and her husband Bo Lysell of Atlanta, NY; four grandchildren, Maximilian MacPherson of Burlington, VT; Augusta MacPherson of New York, NY; Kerstin Lysell Bagley and her husband Ben of Wayland, NY; and Anna Lisa Lysell McLaughlin and her husband Matthew of Newton, MA; one great granddaughter Alma Bagley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Vernon. Emily was the last survivor of the six Fregoe children. Three sisters (Pearl Cockayne, Louise Cockayne, and Bernice Nezezon) and two brothers (William Fregoe and Eugene Fregoe) predeceased her.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to the dedicated United Helpers staff at Maplewood for their loving care.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.phillipsmemorial.com .
