The Ogdensburg Area Zonta Club will be hosting a Walk/Run with an eye-catching twist that has participants wearing bras on the outside of their clothing.

Zonta Club members hope the unique spin on the traditional Walk/Run fundraiser will attract attention and bring awareness for their cause. The bras will be donated to women rescued from a sex trafficking jobs.

Paula J. Jacques, Zonta member, said second-hand clothing is a profitable market in many countries around the world. Bras are usually sought-after items, she said. Girls can make three to five times the minimum wage in their community by selling bras.

“One of our goals is to advance the status of women,” Ms. Jacques said. “To do that, we all need to be aware of what is going on in the world, see where women are being targeted and to figure out what we can do to help women around the world in our own communities.”

The club’s “Free the Girls 5K Walk/Run” will be held May 17 at the Dobisky Visitors Center. Registration starts at 9 a.m., and the race starts at 10 a.m.

Participants will be asked to pick their level of support as part of their registration fee. At the $5 donation level, participants will agree to wear their gently used bra donation proudly on the outside of their race shirt during the race and deposit it at the end. The $10 donation level is for participants who don’t want to run wearing their donation of a gently used bra but will donate one to support the cause. With a $15 donation, participants do not bring a bra, but will be making the donation to help with postage when mailing the bras.

The group is hoping to collect at least 50 bras for the cause, Mrs. Jacques said.

“We hope we can peak people’s interest and therefore help us to prevent violence against women,” Mrs. Jacques said. “It’s something we can do all easily; we are all women and we all wear bras. If someone doesn’t want to participate, they can feel free to drop a bra in the collection bin.”
