Kaneb Orchards debuts St. Lawrence Cider


MASSENA - Guests from various restaurants, liquor stores and wholesalers were introduced to the newest product from Kaneb Orchards on Friday at an invitation-only open house, where the the company debuted its St. Lawrence Cider.

“This is really a soft introduction,” Kaneb Orchards Marketing Coordinator Nancy Badlam said. “We’ll have our full kick-off later in the year during our cider season.”

Edward Kaneb Jr., who owns and operates the orchard, said Kaneb’s first flavor is made mostly with “dessert apples.”

“This is a sweet cider,” he said, adding St. Lawrence Cider is currently the only flavor available. “We hope to have other flavors forthcoming.”

During a tasting which proceeded a tour of Mr. Kaneb’s cidery, Bill Kaneb, a cousin of from Cornwall, Ont., said, “You can taste the fresh apples in this.”

While the cider is made mostly with dessert apples, Mr. Kaneb’s sister, Elizabeth said the final product is actually a blend of sweet and sour apples.

Prior to introducing the cider on Friday, Mr. Kaneb said this is something he has put a lot of work into.

“We did a lot of trials,” he said, adding that even after the apples are fermented they are aged for between six and 12 months before being bottled.

Ms. Badlam said the final product is 4.9 percent alcohol, a percentage that they thought was just the right amount.

“In the U.S. a hard cider had to be kept at 7 percent or under,” Mr. Kaneb said. “With a higher alcohol content, you can taste the sharpness in it.”

During the tour, Town Councilman Albert N. Nicola commented that the cider went really well with the cheese that was served at the event.

Mr. Kaneb added, “It also goes really well with pork.”

Ms. Badlam said she has used the cider to cook, noting it goes well with chicken and pork dishes.

“You can use it the same way you would use wine,” she said, adding she pours it into a crock pot with either chicken or pork.

Upon its release to the public, St. Lawrence Cider will be available in 350 ml and 750 ml bottles. Ms. Badlam said it is their hopes to have the cider available for purchase in local liquor stores and restaurants. The cider will also be seasonably available at the orchard.

“We probably have 2,000 gallons ready to go,” Ms. Badlam said, adding that equals roughly 8,000 to 10,000 bottles.

Mayor James F. Hidy, who was in attendance at the event, said he’s proud to see one of Massena’s businesses doing so well.

“I knew it was only a matter of time before the Kanebs took their core business of cider and donuts and spun it off into something else,” he said. “It’s great to see a business in Massena flourishing and expanding.”
