Winthrop man jailed on menacing charge

WINTHROP — A Winthrop man is in jail after a domestic incident Saturday afternoon that allegedly led to his firing a gun.

Michael A. Bell, 24, of 299 County Route 51, was charged by state police with third-degree criminal mischief, two counts of third-degree menacing, second-degree menacing and illegal discharge of a firearm.

Police said Mr. Bell’s stepbrother went to Mr. Bell’s residence Saturday to retrieve his personal belongings and to confront Mr. Bell about things Mr. Bell had been saying about him. Police said a verbal argument soon escalated and the stepbrother grabbed a shovel that was on the porch for protection.

Police said Mr. Bell then ran inside the house, grabbed his shotgun, went out the back door and fired a round into the air. The stepbrother then put the shovel down and got back into his car to leave the residence, but Mr. Bell took the shovel and smashed the back window and taillight of the vehicle, police said.

Mr. Bell is being held at St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Stockholm Town Court.
