Watertown man indicted on sex trafficking, promoting prostitution charges

WATERTOWN — A Watertown man has been indicted on an allegation that he engaged in sex trafficking by allowing a 17-year-old girl to work as a prostitute.

Joseph D. Coplin, 32, whose last known address was 661 Factory St., is charged with two counts of second-degree promoting prostitution and single counts of sex trafficking, first-degree unlawfully dealing with a child and first-degree perjury.

The charges were contained in a grand jury indictment handed up Monday in Jefferson County Court.

It is alleged that on Feb. 20 he intentionally advanced or profited from prostitution by unlawfully providing a 17-year-old girl, who was working as a prostitute, with cocaine “with the intent to impair her judgment.” It is also alleged that he profited from prostitution by “controlling” a business involving prostitution activities by two or more women. It is further alleged that he permitted the teenage girl to enter or remain in a place where sexual activity was being conducted by renting her a hotel room for the purpose of her working as a prostitute.

He also is alleged to have lied to a grand jury investigating the matter April 30.
