MASSENA - A fast start wound up being enough to propel the Massena Central varsity girls lacrosse team to an 8-4 decision over Potsdam Central in a mid-season matchup of NAC leaders at Mike Nicholas Field on Monday.
After a good start we got a little bit lackadaisical and started to make some mental mistakes, noted coach Jeffrey Slack after the Lady Raiders jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before turning back the Lady Sandstoners. Fortunately, we were able to get away with the win.
Courtney Manley (1 assist) and Jacelyn Lazore connected for three goals apiece to lead the way offensively for Massena (6-3, 5-1). Shannon Casey and Mimi Lazore chipped in a goal and assist each while Devin Kelly recorded a solo assist.
Kalie Grant anchored the Potsdam attack with a pair of goals. Hannah Drechsel tallied a goal and assist while Abby Gruneisen accounted for the other goal.
Felicity Love turned aside seven of the shots she faced working the crease for the win while Katelyn Bloom posted four stops for the Lady Sandstoners (8-2).
Felicity probably had her best game of the year for us, said Slack. Potsdam had a lot of good chances but she came up with the big saves we needed.
The Lady Raiders return to action this afternoon with a game at Salmon River starting at 4:30 p.m. while the Lady Sandstoners are slated to play at OFA on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
The other two NAC girls lacrosse games played on Monday saw Canton outscore OFA 8-5 and Heuvelton play at Saranac Lake.
