LAFARGEVILLE Structural damage to a culvert on Route 411 will close a portion of the roadway from the hamlet to Interstate 81 for about four to six weeks.
Michael R. Flick, spokesman for the state Department of Transportations Region 7, said that the culvert was in the early stages of collapse when crews inspected it earlier in the day Monday. The departments bridge inspection team was near the culvert, which spans the Chaumont River, when a call arrived about a new dip in the road.
It was not in good shape, Mr. Flick said.
He added that the department already planned to replace the culvert this summer. It got there a little sooner than we would have hoped, Mr. Flick said. He said the culvert is about 12 feet wide and 50 feet long, and the replacement pieces will have to be specially made.
Many businesses and the LaFargeville Central School District have been contacted about the change
The department said signs and variable message boards have been established near the intersections of County Route 13 and Route 411, and near the intersection on County Route 15 and Route 411.
Traffic on Interstate 81 will be alerted of the closure through message boards directing traffic to Route 12 and 180 via Exit 47.
