Learn about the history of teatime and enjoy a cup of tea

CANTON — Learn about the history of teatime and enjoy a cup of “tea” with Silas and Clarissa Wright. At at the Second Saturday Children’s Program at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association at the Silas Wright House at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The SLCHA is located at 3 East Main St. with parking available in the back, next to the museum’s main entrance.

This is another in the SLCHA’s series of fun and free monthly educational programs for kids ages 4 to 10 and their caregivers.According to legend, one of Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting created the social ritual of teatime to quench her mid-afternoon hunger. She invited friends to share tea and snacks, along with conversation and “a walking in the fields.” On Saturday, the kids will have the opportunity to partake in a tea party (in honor of Silas Wright’s birthday), play a party game, learn teatime rules of etiquette and share a refreshing cup of “tea” (apple juice) and “biscuits” (cookies).

The 2014 Second Saturday Children’s Programs feature the Treasures from the Attic series, in which each session begins with a mysterious old trunk that belonged to “Grandma Moody” (Clarissa Wright’s ancestor) and had been forgotten in the Silas Wright House attic. Each time the trunk is opened the magic begins, as a new object or objects are “discovered” in the trunk. The Treasures from the Attic series is generously sponsored by the Thompson-Weatherup Family Charitable Foundation. This series is a collaborative effort between the SLCHA and the Fort La Presentation Association.
