HEUVELTON - Throwing strikes is always of paramount importance in baseball.

But the value of control pitching will go from paramount to critical this week as Northern Conference Baseball teams enter a stretch in the schedule filled with doubleheaders (six-inning games) to make up for wholesale weather postponements in the past two weeks.

Heuvelton Central Coach Dave Steele feels that his team has accurate mound depth to deal with the situation.

A mound staff headed by righthander Mike Martin who fired a 10-strikeout one-hitter on Friday as the Bulldogs climbed to 4-1 in a 7-1 victory over Edwards-Knox.

Martin lifted his record in the division to 2-0 and retired the last 13 Cougars after Kaden Dandrow reached on a two-out error and scored an unearned run in the third inning.

“Mike Martin threw a very strong game and kept his pitch count down so he should be fine. Right now we are in pretty good shape because all of our pitchers have good control,” said Steele.

“Jack Palmer and Colin Trathen throws strikes, Dylan Liscum came through for us in his first start and we have two other young guys who can pitch.”

The Bulldogs rallied from a 1-0 deficit against the Cougars breaking lose for five runs in the fifth after being blanked through four by E-K starter Devin Sharlow.

Aidan Scagel, Ben Jacobs (RBI) and Jordan Macauley (RBI) singled in the inning, Dylan Liscum lined a run-scoring double, Andrew Woodard drove in a run with a groundout and Cole Piercey drew a bases-loaded walk.

Liscum also singled home a run in the sixth where Piercey plated a teammate with a sacrifice fly.
